Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Information

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is thought to be an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS) including the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves.

In MS, the CNS nerves lose myelin, the protective coating that helps the conduction of electrical impulses. The exposed areas build scar tissue called sclerosis, and the damaged areas are described as plaques or lesions.

The altered conduction of electrical impulses through the nerves causes the symptoms of MS.

Common symptoms include:
  • muscle weakness
  • altered balance
  • difficulty walking
  • decreased coordination
  • changes in mobility
  • numbness
  • visual changes
  • spasticity
  • difficulty speaking.

The four types of MS include relapsing-remitting, primary progressive, secondary progressive, and relapsing-progressive.

Training with a therapist at Ability helps the brain and body to improve its communication and ultimately improve overall function regardless of the type of MS.
