Low Back Pain Prevention
By Julie Hom, MPT, NCS, Owner of
Ability Rehabilitation Specialists
Are you concerned about that dull ache or nagging pain in your back? You are not alone. Low back pain is the most common cause of job-related disability and a leading cause of missed work, accounting for Americans spending more than $50 billion yearly.
Physical therapists specializing in spine treatments can help improve acute and chronic back pain conditions, and promote injury prevention. Take a minute and learn the principles that form the foundation for a customized healthy back program.
1) Posture - Focus on keeping upright posture with you ear over your shoulder and your shoulder over your hips. Leaning forward or slouching causes a strain on your low back muscles.
2) Exercise - Keeping the right balance of strength and flexibility around the spine is imperative for good back health. If pain exists, a physical therapist will provide an individualized and progressive exercise program targeting the elimination of pain and prevention of future recurrences.
3) Body Mechanics - Use correct lifting techniques. This includes bending with your knees (not at the waist), tightening your stomach muscles, keeping objects close to your body, and turning your entire body instead of twisting at the waist while lifting. Do not try to lift objects too heavy for you, and ask for help when in doubt. Overuse and repetitive strain injuries are common causes of low back pain.
4) Ergonomics - Sit in a chair with good lumbar support (or use a lumbar roll), and keep your shoulders back. Your feet should be flat on the floor, or use a stool if needed. If you sit at your desk for long periods of time, get up periodically to do stretches and walk around your office.
5) Watch Your Weight - Extra weight especially around the waistline puts a strain on your low back muscles. Proper diet and nutrition are an important component to back health and to living a longer, healthier life.
Low back pain can improve and is preventable using these principles. If you are concerned about your back health, consult with a physical therapist specializing in the spine to get you started with your own customized back program.
